The third prayer in this section is The Hail Mary or Ave Maria as it is called in latin. It is a Prayer to the Virgin Mary, giving salutations and asking for her Intercession. The Prayer is based on a greeting from the Angel Gabriel to Mary when he was delivering the message to inform her that she was bearing the Messiah.
Prayer – Preghiera
The Hail Mary
Hail, Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
It has often been accompanied by music and most famously to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C Major from the first volume of “The Well Tempered Clavier”, along with the other well known Franz Schubert’s Ave Maria makes only a reference to actual the Prayer and is not a recital.
Here is Placido Domingo singing the Bach-Gounod Latin and also Italian version of “Ave Maria”
Here is a version of Pavarotti singing the Schubert version”Ave Maria” in Los Angeles:
